Nominations for the election of a member to the vacant seat in the County Council will be received at the Court House, Stafford Town, on Saturday, the 22nd inst. The poll, if necessary, will take place on Tuesday, July 3rd. The Fire Brigade watchman, Mr Grams, reports that about one o’clock this morning. he observed a large fire burning in the direction of Callaghan’s. Up to the time of our going to press no particulars have come to hand.
Mr Button has finally decided not to contest the forthcoming election.
A grand ball will take place this evening at Home’s National Hotel, to which all lovers of the light fantastic are invited. There was a very fair audience last evening, in the Presbyterian Church, to hear the lecture announced to be delivered by the Rev Mr Falconer, on “Things in General.” The object of the lecture was evidently to attack,.in the light of religion, some of the great evils of the present day, more especially as prevailing among the people of the colonies.. The lecturer con-, demned the tendency of colonists to “blow ;” criticised the habit of several expressions in swearing as unmeaning and profane in the extreme; denounced intemperance ; and, said that whilst there was much good done by the Press,, there was also a great deal of harm, and lie ridiculed particularly the novel reader, whom he endeavoured to show was one of the most .useless members of society. The rev. related several humorous and amusing anecdotes in force of the various - subjects he touched upon, which met with frequent applause. Votes of thanks to the lecturer-and gentleman who presided -{the Rev Mr Buttle) brought an hour’s instructive discourse to a close. ’. The West Coast Tiniest states that Mr Grimmbhd the newly-elected member of the County Council for the Totara Riding will probably take his seat at the Qouncil meeting to-day.
