The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 1878.
During the past day or two a report has been circulated in Kumara, and has gained general ciedence, to the effect that certain, misrepresentations have been made td .the. Government which may have the ‘effect "of ?'inducift it to make an alteration in. the site, of the bridge proposed to be erected over the .Tereinakau river— an alteration which, it is alleged, must prove prejudicial to the interests of the bulk of the 1 n habitants. Yesterday evening ■ (as will be seen from a report in another column) an impromptu meeting of influential residents in the district, was held for the purpose of considering the matter, and telegrams received from the Minister of Public Works, were then read, which leave not a shadow of doubt that some attempt, concealed from the general public, has been made to induce the Government to depart from the understanding previously arrived at. . .- i ,;
The gentlemen who met last night, representing all sections of the community, considered it advisable to ventilate the question more fully at a public meeting called in the usual maimer; and as, especially in this instance, “ time is money,” the meeting has been called for to-night. It will, we have no doubt, be fully attended ; and while we would urge upon those who may take an active part in the proceedings the utmost moderation, we would also point out that a question pregnant of good or evil to the future of Kumara is at issue, and that to trifle means to lose.
Lf>t there be no mistake as to the matter to be considered by the meeting. It is not whether one site is better than another. A site which the public is in perfect accord with the Government in bplievimr to be the heat one has been fixed upon ; and to-night’s meeting must protest against any unauthorised interference in existing arrangements being listened to. We point to no individual or individuals, bat we do so. that, if onr information is correct, the
farce of the three tailors of Tooley
street who described themselves as “ We the people of England ” has been eclipsed in Kumara.
