Bluff, June 12. The Claud Hamilton has arrived with one day’s later news, viz., to the sth instant:— Dr. Maeartney, who had a eheqhered career as Clergyman, Barrister, Fiji planter, Legislator, and Teetotal lec-, turer, died by poison on Sunday, thus creating a vacancy for South Gipp*. land. An inquest was commenced on his remains and was adjourned till an analysis of the contents ot the stomach can be made. The Melbourne Cup entries number IHB. This is fewer than last year, hut the duality of the horses is better. Only one aged horse is on the list. Mr L. Walruer has two Traducer colts, which appear to hail from New Zealand. Miss Amy Sherwin, the Tasmanian prima donna, scored a great success with the Italian Opera Company.
