[press agency.] Dunedin, May 28. The Herald this morning, commenting on the trial Whitaker v. Jones (of the Oamaru Herald) says that the cost of the prosecution will be considerably under £2OO, while that of the defence, according to the bill of costs recently delivered, will amount to £2117 14s. Among the items composing the bill are the following:—Paid Mr Flees, £540 ; paid Mr Rees, refresher, £275; paid Mr Hislop, £270; refresher to j Mr Hislop, £137 10s. It is stated • that other items equally outrageous could be culled from the bill of costs presented by Messrs Rees and Uisiop. Twenty-nine entries Were received here last night for the Dunedin St. Leger; but entries were also received at Christchurcb, and will not be published till the list is completed. All the papers published here with the exception of the Times,, severely censure the Government, for giving i its advertisements only to th >se papers I which support its policy. j Doeherty and party have returned J from Dusky Sound by the steamer Maori, bringing two tons of specimens ■ from the copper lode there. They ! broke some 12 feet into the crown <>f the lode and report the prospects exfavorable.
