FORMATION OF A CHESS CLUB IN KUMARA.

A meeting of chessplajmrs took place on Monday evening, at Rugg’s Hotel. MrJanion, being called to the chair, | explained that the meeting bad been publicly announced in order to test the practicability of organizing a chess club in Kumara. Several gentlemen had expressed their desire to join such an institution, if formed, and the initiative had now been taken by the last and full meeting of members of the late Chess Match Committee, who were persuaded that in a community where there were so many and good players a chess club would have a very fair amount of patronage. After several gentlemen had spoken in its favour, Mr Lowrie moved and Mr Kennedy | seconded the following motion : “ That a chess club be formed, to be called the Kumara Chess Club.” j The proposition was carried unaniI mously. Mr Gill proposed and Mr Morgan seconded : “ That the subscription be Is per month.” This motion was also carried unanimously. The following gentlemen were severally proposed and elected as the Committee: Messrs Jauion, Gill, Blackburn, Smart, Petrie ; three to form a quorum. The Committee are empowered to draw up rules for the guidance of the Club, to be afterwards submitted to a general meeting of the members; at which meeting the election of officers will also lake place. The Committee are authorised in the meantime to canvass ihe districts iu which i!i°y reside for the speedy sweilI ing of the list of members. I The meeting then adjourned.
