It is believed here that Schouvaloff has convinced the Emperor that it is Russia’s interest to yield to the English demands re the European Congress, the meeting of which now appears assured. San Francisco, May 17. Russian agents have bought the swift steamer State of California. London, May 18. A San Francisco telegram states that the Russian Government has purchased the steamer City of Sydney from the Pacific Company, which sailed for Sydney last Monday ; and also the steamer State of California, which was launched yestei day, and that they are j in treaty for two other steamers. 1 Telegrams from the Continent are more hopeful. It is reported that Connt Schouvaloff is convinced that it is Russia’s interest to yield to the Congress, which it is now expected will meet in spite of the troubles which have arisen at Stand.oul. The Daily News reports that General Toddloben has sunt the Porte an ultimatum demanding the evacuation of Shurala, Varna, and Batoum, and the Russian occupation of Buyrikdere. A serious riot has taken place at Preston. Constantinople, May 18. Notwithsi anding the pacific tone of the St. Petersburg Press, the Russians continue massing troops near here, along the B >sphnrus, and towards Gallipoli, Tnoir head-quarters still remain at Stefauo. St. Petersburg, May 19. Count Schouvaloff has started for Loudon. i The semi-official journals here say i the movements of the Russian troops is i for sanitary reasons, and with no ini lention to occupy Constantinople.
