The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 1878.

The polling for the election of a member to represent the Grey Yalley electorate in the room of Martin Kennedy, Esq., resigned, will take place to-day, the candidates being Messrs Harrison, Reeves, and Barrowtnan. At the time of our going to press, the state of the poll, had not been declared. The friends of Mr and Mrs M‘Mahon are invited to a grand ball at the Shamrock Hotel this evening. Applications for the situation of Wardsman to the Hospital will be receive by the Secretary up to Monday next. After the usual company drill of the i local Rifles last evening, Private Green was called to the front, and presented with the fourth prize in the late district firing. Two new members were proposed and elected, and the resignation of Sergeant Lourie, who is leaving the district, was received with regret, he being one of the oldest and also most active members in the interests of the company since its formation. A curious incident occurred during the Rotorua’s last passage from Wellington to Auckland. It appears that one of the firemen had been indulging pretty freely unknown to the chief engineer, and had become so besotted that lie jumped overboard while in a state of delirium tremens. The unfortunate man walked on to the bridge and deliberately dived into the sea. The cry of “ Man overboard I” was instantly raised. The engines were reversed and a boat lowered with all despatch. In the meantime the wouldbe suicide was swimming like a fish, the water haying, no doubt, cooled his desire to get rid of this world ; and when a life-buoy was thrown he seized it with avidity and put his body through it, and coolly awaited the arrival of' the boat, j under Mr Cromarty, the chief officer! l On reaching the vessel, the man was sent j below and kept in close confinement, and j on arrival was given into the charge of j the police. 1 A magnificent new map of New. Zealand, on a very large scale, has just been issued by the Geological Department. It ; is founded on that compiled by Dr. Hector, and drawn by Mr A. Koch for the International Exhibition, held at , Vienna, and the Philadelphia Centennial i Exhibition of 187(>. This one is by Mr : E. G. Ravanstein, F.R.G.S., Geographer ; to the Royal Geographical Society, who had the advantage of Dr. Hector’s valuable assistance, during the latter i gentleman’s visit to England. It is by far the finest and most complete map of Zealand ever yet issued, and no

doubt when obtainable by the public will be eagerly sought after. Messrs D. Davidson and Co. notify elsewhere that they have wonderful bargins in new, sound, and fashionable drapery. The success of the new reapers and binders in Victoria seems likely to lead to their, v being extensively used in the colony during .the coining harvest. Burns' says," with gloomy grandeur, “There is a foggy atmosphere native to my sold in the hour of care, which makes the dreary objects seem larger than life.” He who suffers thus cannot be relieved by any appliances save those that touch the heart—the homelier the more sanative—and none so sure as a wife’s affection. True, O poet, but he who suffers the racking pains of rheumatism, sciatica, or lumbago, should use, combined with your prescription, “ Ghollah’s Great Indian Cures,” the wonder of the nineteenth century. Testimonials may be seen in another column, and Medicines may be procured at all Chemists.— [Advt.] For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.— [Advt.]
