rte remind all chessplayers that the general meeting takes place at Rugg's Hotel, this evening, at half-past seven o'clock. It is expected from the great favour in which the royal game is held by miners and the community generally of Kumara and its vicinity that there will be a large attendance.
There was a large audience on Saturday i evening at the Theatre Royal, to witness j the performance of the Raphael troupe. j The trapeze feats by Master franklin were i executed with a skill that we have seldom j seen equaled. The Juvenile Blondin, as j on the previous occasion, received wellI merited applause for the dexterity he ex- | Minted in walking on the single wire. The j entertainment concluded with the celoi brated Japenese box trick, to explain j which we. will not attempt, as it must be j seen to be understood. The company will I give an extra performance this evening. We notice that our respected friend Tommy Maker invites his patrons and the public generally to a grand ball, to be held in celebration of his opening the new premises—the Empire Hotel, Dillman's Town—on Friday evening next. The Charles Edward, which brought the San Francisco mail and a large number of passengers, arrived alongside the Greymouth wharf yesterday morning, from Westport, where she had been detained for many days through the recent heavy weather. The Grey bar was in splendid condition, there being a .straight run out with 15ft. of water on the shoalest part. Amongst the passengers bv the steamer were Mr and Mrs Hebcr Kowton and family, who were heartily welcomed by a large number of friends after their visit to the old country. The Waipara arrived in the Hokitika roadstead last night from I ikarito, where she has been detained for several days through breaking a shaft. On crossing the bar she found 10ft. of water. A very sad case of suicide which occurred yesterday, and which, when it became known, cast a gloom over the whole community, is reported by the Grey River Argus :—For some time past Mr Thomas Hunter, of the firm of Arnott and Hunter, carpenters and builders, has exhibited symptoms of mental perturbation, which have caused anxiety to his partner in business and his personal friends. On Saturday evening lie appeared to be in better j spirits than usual, and retired to bed in ■ Mr Arnott's house, where he has been re- ; siding for some time, shortly after mid- ; nig at. About half-past seven o'clock yes- ; tevday morning Mr Arnott got up, and, i finding that Mr Hunter had gone out, ! walked up to the State School, where the | firm had some work on hand, and after- j wards on to the hospital, but without see- ' ing him. About 12.30 Mr Arnott wenUo I the workshop m Terapuki :;ircet, and not j rinding the key of the door in the olace it ; was usually "planted," ho looked through } the window, and, to Ids horror, saw Mr | Hunter hanging by the neck against one j or the walls. Mr Arnott immediately j humeri away m search of assistance, and | met Air James, of the Disoatch Foundry, < who went to the shop, burst open the ; door, and cut the body down. A few ; minutes afterwards Dr Acheson, under ■ whose care Mr Hunter had been, arrived, j and pronounced, life to he extinct. The I act must have, been premeditated, as de- : ceased Lid locked the door inside, and had i carefully laid aside his coat and hat. It : appears that suspicions of a tendency to : suicide on Hunter's part have for some i time been entertained by ids friends, and > that those who knew him most intimately ! are not surprised at his sad end. An in- ! quest would, in all probability, be held to- I day. |
