Reefton, May 16. Mr Richard Reeves, one of the Candidates for the Grey Valley seat, addressed the electors at Black’s Point today. He strongly opposed the policy of the present Government. He re ceived a unanimous vote of confidence. There was a terrific storm last night, but no serious damage is yet reported.
Dunedin, May 16. The northern line from Moeraki to Palmerston will be opened for trafic on Tuesday next. It is expected that through communication between Christchurch and Dunedin will be established on the 25th June.
Mr Seaton, member for Green Island, addressed his constituents last night. He strongly defended the action of the Otago representatives against the charge that they had sold the rights of the Province, and said that they had made the best bargiu ever made for Otago. The proposal for manhood suffiage he regarded as “ bunkum,” but he would perhaps, be forced to vote for it to prevent the Atkinson Government gettin" into power. He thought the only way out of the present difficulties was to have a County or Board of Works for each Island. A vote of confidence was carried unanimously. Auckland, May 16. The Government has determined to stop the sale of Native reserves. Seven were offered to the Government during Mr Sheehan’s recent visit to the Kin" Country but declined. He informed the Natives that the reserves were made a present to them.
Hawkes, sailraaker on board H.M.S. Saphire, during her passage here, jumped overboard, and rescued a man named Begley who had fallen overboardHawkes held him up 37min. till a boat picked him up. Begley was insensible. This is the seventh life Hawkes has rescued. He holds a Humane Society medal. J
LATEST UNPUBLISHED. THREE STEAMERS MISSING. Wellington, May 17. The Port Dawin line is interrupted north of Charlotte Waters. Communication was restored with the Tasmanian cable yesterday evening. Considerable anxiety is felt here regarding the steamers Storinbird, Tui, and the Government steamer Stella* which left here last Saturday and Sunday. The Stella left for Taranaki on Saturday ; the Stormbird, for Wanganui, on Sunday • and the Tui, for Foxton, on the same. day. Neither, it appeals, have reached their destination yet, thongh the St. Kilda and Manawatu have left for Wanganui since. As a vessel has arrived from Queen Charlotte Sound, and reports having sicditnd no steamers taking shelter, anxiety fo naturally aroused.
