The Port Darwin line is again interrupted north of Charlotte Waters.
Attention was directed in these columns f. fe !f dayS ago to tlle disgraceful state of the Dillman’s town track, we have since ascertained that although the track then , m entioned has been cleared to a certain extent, the one to Larrikin’s remains in the same state, and that through either the inability or sluggishness of. the >■ authorities, the storekeepers of the'town
have been compelled to engage men at their own expense to render communication with Larrikin’s available for packing purposes. °
With all due respect to that august body the Borough Council, we would suggest the desirability of a little personal comfort being provided on meeting nights, in the shape of a fire in the Town Hall. Last evening there was a full attendance of the members present on the opening of business, but long before it concluded, several had departed outwardly shivering; There was a full attendance of the Chess Match Committee last evening, a t Rugg’s Hotel, being the first occasion of their meeting since the contest with Greymouth. The captain of the team formally reported the result, and made eulogistic reference to the manner in which they were received and entertained. The accounts for advertising were passed and ordered to be paid ; and then the question of forming a, chess club was brought up, several gentlemen having expressed their desire or willingness to join such an institution in Kumara. It was resolved to call a general meeting of all chessplayers on Monday next, of which public notice of tune and place will be given tomorrow.
The Raphael Gymnastic Family made their first appearance at the Theatre Royal, last evening. The audience was small, but appreciative. The performances throughout of the troupe, show that as acrobats, they are complete masters of their profession, the wire walking of Master Burnell being alone worthy of a visit. The Dillman’s Town band played during the entertainment, and we should advise those persons who have not already witnessed these clever gymnasts to avail themselves of the opportunity offered this evening.
Mr and Mrs M‘Mahon invite their friends, and the public generally to a ball at their Hotel, on Wednesday next. We were shown this morning a splendid specimen of the vegetable kingdom, presented to Mr Gilbert Stewart, being a prodigious cabbage, weighing 221bs. It was grown in a garden at the Greenstone.
From to-day’s Argus we extract the following Yesterday forenoon it was reported to the police by Mr M'llroy, who keeps an accommodation-honse at the Seventeen-mile (North) Beach, that fhe dead body of a man had been found at the Twelve-mile Beach. It is in such a state of decompositon that identification is impossible. A constable has been sent to take charge of the remains, and superintend their removal; but it is difficult to understand why they should be removed to Greyraouth for the purpose of holding an inquest, inasmuch as unless they can be identified no verdict that might be returned would be of any practical value. If the body is in the condition described to us, it would be the wiser course to bury it where it lies.
From the annual report of the Westland Education Beard, we gather that the receipts from all sources, during the past year have been £19,577 19s lid, and the total expenditure for the same time £20,763 14s 6d. Four news schools have been opened making a total of twenty nine in the district, including three subsidized ones.
It ia said that a disagreeable surprise awaits Mr H Stanley, the celebrated explorer, on his return home. A New York lady, to whom he has been long engaged, and to whom ho was to be married on his return from the present expedition, has wearied of waiting, and taken to herself a mate more likely to atop at home. The London “ Standard’s” Belgrade correspondent, telegraphing on February 20, says It is stated on good authority that one point in the Russo-Turkish secret treaty to help the Sultan is, that the latter declares himself Emperor of the Mahoramedans in India. ”

True, 0 poet, but he who suffers the racking pains of rheumatism, sciatica, or lumbago, should use, combined with your prescription, “ Ghollah’s Great Indian Cures,” the wonder of the nineteenth century. Testimonials may be seen in another column, and Medicines may be procured at all Chemists.—[Advx.] For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.— [Advt.j
