Christchurch, May 15. At the Magistrate's Court this morning James Woodford, an elderly man, third master of the East Christchurch School was committed for trial for a criminal assault on a girl ten years of age who attended the school. The evidence appeared very conclusive. At the termination of the case the mother of the girl, in a very excited state, made her way into the Court, and threateued to kill Woodford.

Lyttelton, May 15. Constable Daniel Devine fell down dead at the police barracks here to-day. The suppose cause of death was a rapture of a blood vessel. The deceased has been stationed here for some time, and was much resp2cted. Dunedin, May 15. Mr Wilson's house at Well Park was burnt down this morning. The house with furniture, were insured in the Standard for £ISOO, and South British £BOO. But he estimates his loss above these sums.

Mr De Latour, M.HR, was presented with a purse of 150 sovereigns at Naseby, by his constituents, previous to his departure for Napier. Wellington, May 15. The Government has suspended Mr James Booth, R.M. and Land Purchase Commissioner on the West Coast, for alleged improper dealing in Native land near Otaki for the benefit of himself or his brother, whose services as a Land Purchase Commissioner were recently dispensed with. It is found, however, that ha has secured a block of 420 acres, and another individual a block of 1600 ncres near Otaki, t> the loss of Government. A royal Coramission will be appointed to inquire into Booth's conduct.
