The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1878.

Electors are reminded that the nominations for the election of a-member to represent this district in the County Council will close to-morrow, at noon. Nomination papers may be obtained at the Warden's Court. The poll, if necessary will take place on Saturday, the 25th instant.

The Borough Council will meet this evening at the usual hour.

The Resident Magistrate intimated this morning that in future punctuality would have to be observed by persons having business m connection witft the Court, as he very justly observed that the parties most interested—the plaintiffs and defendants in caaes—were, when called, most conspicuous by their absence.

1 A meeting of the Hospital Committee will be held at the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday next. We understand that business of great importance v has necessiated calling together the mem-

bers of the Committee on that particular

evening. I There was a heavy fresh in the Tere- | makua river this morning, it being bank j high. The punt up to noon to-day has been unable to cross.

| The first appearance of those talented ; acrobats, the Raphael troupe, -will posi- ! tively take place at the Theatre Royal to- ; night. As from the inclement state of the weather, this entertainment has been post- ; poned from day to day, at considerable i loss to themselves, it is to be hoped that ; the change in the elements, combined with ! a good house, will to-night replenish the ; exchequer. j Considering the inclement state of the weather, there was a good muster of the local Rifles at the Public Hall on Tuesday evening. In the absence ofrthe oflicer commanding, the Company had an hour's smart drill under Sergt. Lowrie; By an order received from the District Officer, j six members of the Kumara Contingent j are entitled as marksmen, by the scores j they made when firing in their yearly | musketry class, to wear a rifle and two I stars in silver on their left arm.

A very singular phenomenon, observed by residents of the Tuapeka, is thus recorded in the local paper : —On Sunday morning last, about 3 o'clock, a brilliant body, about half the size of the moon, was witnessed by Mr Vye for a couple of hours, travelling from east to west in the heavens at a speed faster than the apparent motion of the luminary of the night. It was so bright that he could not steadfastly gaze upon it, and the beams it spx'ead around were more of the bright sunlight than the soft silver light of the moon. Some six or eight weeks ago a similar object was observed by Mr Norman, of the Blue Spur, and, as described by him, tally almost exactly with those related to us by Mr Vye.

Burns says, with gloomy grandeur, "There is a foggy atmosphere native to my soul in the hour of care, which makes the dreary objects seem larger than life." He who suffers thus cannot be relieved by any appliances save those that touch the heart—the homelier the more sanative—and none so sure as a wife's affection. True, O poet, but he who suffers the racking pains of rheumatism, sciatica, or lumbago, should use, combined with your prescription, " Ghollah's Great Indian Cures," the wonder of the nineteenth century. Testimonials may be seen in another column, and Medicines may be procured at all Chemists.—[Advt.] For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.—• [Advt. j
