THE LATE CHESS MATCH.
The following is, we believe, the best-contested game in the late chess match between Kumara and Greymouth. At his 11th and 12th moves, Mr Petrie seems to have delivered himself over to his veteran antagonist, and, though making an excellent and desperate struggle to free himself, he never recovered. We are indebted to one of the players for the notes. It is probable we may give one more of the six games of the match—the one won by Greymouth.

Q to Kt 7, mate. Notes. (a). P to Q 4 is the correct move here. (b). Loses time. (c). By this move Black gets a strong counter attack. (d). Playing Black's game, and needlessly exposing the king. (e). A precautious move. .. (f). Having made.all snug at home, Black now carries the war into the enemy's territory. (g). An embarrassing move for White. (h). A tempting but exceedingly dangerous capture. (i). R to Kt sq. looks more to the purpose. (j). Black loses time here. Rtoß 3is the coup juste. (k). R to Kt 2 seems stronger. (I). The beginning of the end. (m). The only move ; Qto R 3 would have lost the Q. (n). White has now a very difficult game. Pto Q B 3 is perhaps his best but even then Black can retreat the Kt to Q B 3 and retain a winning position.
the best play could not now have long averted the catastrophe.
