I Wellington, May 10. I Wm. O'Connor, charged with at--1 tempting to poison Wra. Light, the landlord of Barrett's Hotel, was brought up to-day, and after some further eviI dence was taken, was committed for trial. He reserved his defence. A long and warm altercation took place in the Supreme Court this morning between the Chief Justice and Mr Barton. Mr Barton protested in strong terms against delaying the hearing of his clients' cases. The Judge warmly checked him for using such disrespectful language to the Court. He pointed out that it was understood that the cases should come on before both Judges, and that Judge Kichmond was detained ou the West Coast. Mr Barton said that Judge Richmond should have been here before; he should not study his private convenience ; and in reply to a remark of the Judge that Mr Travers, the solicitor on the other side, was not present, Mr Barton said that no doubt if Mr Travars had appealed and he (Barton) had not, the case would have been struck off. The Judge reprimanded him for making such an imputations. Mr Barton defended himself on the ground that he had said nothing disrespectful. The Judge repeatedly insisted upon his sitting down, but Mr Barton said that no threat of imprisonment by the court would intimidate him from doing his duty by his client. He asked no favors from the Court and would not accept them if offered. After further interchanges of the same kind the Judge adjourned the Court. The Evening Post has issued a writ for a thousand poauds damages against ■the Evening Chronicle for libel in regard to certain allegations about the Post's special cable news. Auckland, May 10. The Rev. Mr Haze! ton, who arrived by the Zealaudia, is delegated by the Irish Wesleyan Conference to collect subscriptions to liquidate the balance of the cost of Dublin (?) University. A serious collapse occurred at Helensville railway station, Kaipara. Seven, hundred feet of double piling, driven to support the earth work along lihe river bank, giving way. The structure contained two hundred thousand feet of totara, and was intended to carry thirty thousand yards of earth work, but has given way under the weight of the first hundred tons.
Alexandra, (Hikuragi), May 10 (Noon). Tawhiao demands that Waikato be placed under his control from Mauneatautiriri to Taupo. He says this must be settled to-day. Sir George Grey offered hire lands belonging to the Governmeut on the right bank of the river, and five hundred acres at Ngaruawahia, for £SOO a-year ; to build a house, for him at, Kawhia, and. give bim allotments in the township for his children. The meeting is going on. Christchurch, May 10. The Drainage Board to-day decided to adopt Mr Clarke's scheme for the drainage of Christchurch.
The employees on the railway have decided to form themselves into a fire brigade.
