The annual meeting of the parish ijners of the Church of England will be held tomorrow evening, at the new church, in Seddon street, to elect vestry men and church wardens for the ensuing year. We are requested to state that registration forms will be obtainable in the church, and that members of the congregation can register previous to the meeting. A special summons meeting of the Court Pride of Kumara, No 6272, A.0.F., will take place to-morrow evening for the election of trustee and treasurer. The ordinary Court meeting will take place at B'clock. Some most successful experiments with the telephone were made yesterday afternoon between Kumara and Greymouth. Our reporter's notes of the conversations that took place between well-known' 'identities" at either end have been handed to our esteemed contributor, Mr Truman, who doubtless will make some excellent use of them. At the meeting at the Melbourne Hotel, Greymouth, on Saturday evening last, of persons desirous of forming a chess club and wishing to take part in the match with Kumara on Saturday evening next, 4th May, we have been informed there were about twenty gentlemen present. The desirableness of forming a club having been affirmed, the following gentlemen were (the Argus reports) elected as officers :—Mr Greenwood, president; Mr Worsley, treasurer;. and Messrs Clements, James, Petrie, and Aiken as members of committee. The entrance-fee was fixed at ss, with an additional subscription of 2s 6d per month, if the "committee thought fit to make such a call. It was resolved that the match with Kumara should take place at the Melbourne Family Hotel, Mackay. street, at which place members are requested to meet .for practice, .to enable a team.to be selected. -.-. It is : in contemplation by the officer com.mahd.iiig the district to hold a review of the whole of the Westland Volunteer ' Force in Kumara on the Queen's birth- I day, and already in Greymouth a sub- j scription has beeen started to provide the i necessary expenses for the transmission of the Cadets, including the Drum and Fife Band, on that date. Should the weather prove favourable, there is but little doubt that between the Hokitika, Greymouth, and Kumara Cops, we may expect to see a good muster-' At a farewell tea-meeting in Hokitika, on Saturday evening the Rev. G.. W. Russell was presented with a piece of jewelry. He is succeeded by the Rev. J. Smith. The Hospital is one of the first things that the population of this district have a perfect right to support. No other insti T tution deserves to be better patronised. But, in order to have no complaint originating from this most inclement weather, : the best thing for the people to do is to clothe themselves with good and useful articles; and where better to procure them than at D. Davidson and Co.'s? where the largest assortment can be procured, cheaper much than elsewhere.— D. Davidson and Co., Berlin House. Kumara. —[ Advt. ]
