The Diem iters of. the new Hospital Committee, elected by,the subscribers in the Theatre Royal last week, will hold their first meeting this evenings when the success or otherwise of the proposed hospital will depend very much upon the course of action decided upon. In passing, we may say we note with, satisfaction that at the very outset a step in the right direction has been made, inasmuch as it evidently is intended that in future committee meetings shall be held in a public hall, not in a public-house. The objections to the use of taverns for the holding of meetings of such bodies are too obvious to require particularization here /but we may just point oat that one of the most trenchant is that, rightly or wrongly, it gives rise to personal jealousies, and affords to a section of the community an. opportunity to insinuate motives which in all probability have no existence, but the veiy imputation of which acts detrimentally to the interests of such an institution as that under notice. For this reason, if for no other, we repeat that the new Committee is to be congratulated upon having decided to meet elsewhere. The. first business to be transacted to-night will be the election of officers. It would be invidious were we to indicate the direction in which the Committee should look for their President, Treasurer, and Secretary ! and, in recalling the names of the gentlemt-n elected to manage the affairs of the Hospital, it is gratifying to observe that there is no dearth of the proper material. Having proceeded so far, the next matter to be discussed is the all-important one of ways and means ; and, as eveiy man experienced in such matters full well knows, the better plan is to relegate the consideration of details to a sub-committee of practical men. Indeed, even at the risk of appearing to dictate, we believe that if to-night the General Committee will elect sub-committees -Financial, Building, and Visiting commutes—and meet again at an early date to consider their several reports, they will do more towards furthering the project than if they talk for hours. Above all let them avoid drifting into anything approaching extravagance on the strength of the sum standing to their credit. That sum, properly husbanded,' will achieve wonders; but it may, under different management, be dissipated before even a commencement has been made towards the accomplishment of the noble object in view.
