Bates, Sise, and Co., as attorneys for Perry Davis, instituted proceedings, yesterday, in the Supreme Court, against one Wilckin, a manufacturer of " painkiller," said to be an imitation of Perry Davis's. Other defendants are the sub-agents, Hay man and Co., and Lange and Thoneman. The ex parte motion was waived to give defendants an opportunity of being heard. Christuhurch, April 25. There are 28 entries for the Champagne Stakes of 1879, viz, Webb, 4; Garforth, 1 ; Goodman, 1 ; Paterson, 2; Todhunter, 1; Mallock, 4; Brabazon, 1 ; Lance, 3 ; Redwood, 6; Delamain, 1; O'Brien, 1; Seabright, 1. Lance's entries include the colt St. George, purchased in Sydney for the Middle Park Company. Wellington, April 25. Mr Clark, civil engineer, is now engaged in devising a scheme for the drainage, and has also undertaken to report upon the best means of bringing in additional water supply for the town, from the Pakuratahi stream, either by ditch or aqueduct. Spurious sovereigns are being circulated to some extent here now. Napier, April 25. Mr Ormond was presented to-day with a veiy handsome silver candelabra, valued at £2BO, the gift of a number of Hawkes Bay settlers, in recognition of his services whilst Superintendent. Allan M' Lean's wool shed, at Tukituki, was burned to the ground to-day, destroying besides about £3OO worth of grass seed. The Census returns show the population of Napier to be 5342, against 3414 Census 1874. Hawkes Bay County, 874; Waiaoa County, 826; Waipawa County, 4702. Blenheim, April 26. On the Wakamarina terrace four men are on payable gold, thirteen feet sinking. One grain to the dish is obtained. ' . Wellington, April '26. The New Zealand Times appeared this morning enlarged to the same size as the: leading journals of the Colony. The Hon. Dr Pollen has left Auckland to take charge of the paper as Editor. It is stated that immigration under the auspices of the Government, which ceased for some months, has been resumed. It has been ordered that free passages shall be provided for immigrants so that they may anive here in the Spring, when there will be a large demand for their services. It is intended that passages for 5,000 free immigrants shall be granted for the year.
