ARAHURA ROAD BOARD.
The usual meeting was held at the Road Board Office, Stafford, yesterday. Present: Messrs JrirSths (chairman), Sandle, M'Alpine, Hannan, and Murphy. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Letters were read and received from County Clerk, re bridge from Pipers to Stafford; from Mr J. J. -Clarke, re assessment account; from John Whelan, re extras on Dillman's Town road ; from same, re his accouut for Seddon street; from County Clerk," requesting a copy of Ratepayer's Listrequest granted as soon as Secretary's duties will permit. The Chairman proposed " That the Engineer of the Board be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for makiTig a road from the Fourth Terrace to Lamplough; specifications to be laid on the table at next meeting. Mr Hannan moved the following amendment:—" That inasmuch as the members of this Board have individually expressed an opinion that it is mjudicious to merge the Arahura Road Board in the County, and that such opinion was eudorsed at meetings of the ratepayers held in the various centres : therefore the question of incurring any further liability be deferred for fourteen days, until the County Council be communicated with, either by letter or deputation, in order to ascertain the Council's views as to the merging of the Boards ; and if the answer be against merging, then the work stated in the proposition to be proceeded with forthwith ; and in the meantime that steps be taken to make and the general rate for the purpose of paying off pressing liabilities." Mr Murphy seconded the amendment. The Chairman by leave withdrew his proposition pending an answer from the Council. The amendment was then agreed to as a substantive resolution. On the motion of Mr Hannan, seconded by Mr Sandle, it was curried, that a c<ipy of the foregoing resolution be forwarded to tl-e County Chairman with request that an answer as to the views of the Council re the matter contained therein be returned. Mr Sandle proposed, xMr Hannan seconded, and it was carrie 1, " That a general rate of 12 pence in the pound tie made from the Ist day of April, 1878, to the 31st day of March, 1878, to bft payable on the 15th day of Miy, 1878." Mr Saudi" proposed, Mr M'Alpine second'*!, and it was carried, " That Mr Byrne, receive >ue month's notice that his engagement with the B »ard will cease on the first day of June next, with a view to making future arrangements with him." Council's proclamation, declaring such roads main roads. After several accounts were passed for payment, the Board adjourned for a fortnight.
