BUTCHER'S GULLY QUARTZ REEF.
PUBLIC MEETING AT HOKITIKA. [from our own correspondent.] Hokitika, April 25. The meeting held last night, to take preliminary steps to work the Butcher's Gully Quartz reef, was a great success. Notwithstanding the downpour of rain, the room was crowded, fully two hundred amongst them being leading residents of the district. The Mayor was voted to the chair. Mr Rae, at considerable length, detailed the information already obtained as to the character oi the lode and cost of procuring a battery of sufficient power to work it. He stated that the reef was 10 feet wide, and had been traced an immense distance. It proved to be gold-bearing in all parts, and it was generally believed to be highly payable. After discussion, it was unanimously agreed to form a company with a capital of £12,000 in £1 shares ; £3OOO to be called up. Twelve hundred shares were at once subscribed for. Several Kumara miners, who have an interest in leases, were present. It is confidently expected that great results will ensue from the development of this new quartz country.
