The panorama of the Russo-Turkish War will be exhibited at the Theatre Royal this evening. The mechanical scene of the battle between the gun boats and torpedoes is, judging from the favorable comments made on it by various papers well worth witnessing. The gifts will be distributed on the art union principle. As will be seen on reference to another column that Jeffcott’s Wagonette will leave the Crown Hotel every morning at 7.30. booking passengers through to Ross. The usual weeldy parade of the local Rifles will not be held this evening as tomorrow night the monthly inspection will take place. It is computed that the total number of persons annually employed in getting coal in Europe is 700,000. In Great Britain, 300,000; in Belgium and Prance, 120,000 ; in Prussia, 80,000 ; and the remaining 200,000 elsewhere, A billion, according to the British notation, consists of thirteen figures; and by the French and United States system, the same sum only requires ten figures to express it. 1,410,000,000, roubles read by the British notation, is one thousand four hundred and ten millions of roubles ; but by the French system it would read: one billion four hundred and ten millions of roubles. By the British notation a billion is a million millions ; by the French notation it is only a thousand millions, a considerable difference in the power of expression when large suras are dealt with. A speccial telegram of the war news • having reached D. Davidson and 00. in time for the Autumn and Winter stock, jthey availed themselves of the opportunity •to be first in the markets and purchase while goods were cheap, leaving others to buy during peace negotiations, and consequently have to pay much more for them. So that D. Davidson and 00. will sell 25 per cent, cheaper than any house on the i West Coast.
