A correspondent sends the Christchurch Press the following :—On April Ist two" young men went to Le Bon's Bay pigeon Bhootingv Leaving their horses tethered at the outskirts of the-bush, and planting their Baddies and bridles, they proceeded' into the thick bush, where the pigeons are to be found. While they were there a nor'-wester, sprang up, re-kindling some smouldering embers. The fire soon spread to the bush, and in a..short time the Bpjortsmen found themselves surrounded with fire, from which they had the greatest difficulty in saving their lives. As it was they loßt one gun, and on returning to the place where they left their horses! they found only the remains of a tether rope, and some frizzled up leather. After searching for some time they found one horse with nearly all the hair singed off On resuming the search the next day they found the remains of the other horse which had been suffocated. They intend getting the single pigeon which they killed on the occasion stuffed and put in a glass case, to remind tfcenfcjbf iAll Pool's Day, 1878. The Lyttelton Times reports that a most exciting scene occurred at Cooper and j Bailey's menagerie and circus the- other I morning. In accordance with the general j custom, some of .the animals, secured with I chains and stout'collars, werelaken out of i their cages for exercise. Upon taking out • the prairie wolf, the animal in some man- I ner managed to slip the'collar over his | head,, and instantly there was a scene of ' the greatest, confusion, the helpers climb- | ing up poles-and mounting on to the tops of cages to escape the chance of an ugly i bite.. For some time the efforts to secure the animal failed, but at last he rushed ' into the cooking tent, where Mr Aymar < lassoed Him very cleverly. The young ! fellow who has charge of the wolf then placed him in the cage, but as he was at- ; templing to pass a collar round his neck he was bitten severely. He courageously
endeavoured to grasp the wolf with his other hand, when in a moment that also was bitten, and with equal severity. It will be some time before he loses his mementos of an exciting .chase. Mark Twain, the well-known humour-' ist has become the responsible editor of a newspaper called the .Courant, and intends to make' it a semi-political, semihumours journal. The Courant is a very old newspaper, and, in some respects, it has always been a fuhny one ; but Mark Twain's plan is to make humour a more prominent feature of every department, even to the advertisements, which are to be written by himself, and printed at twice the ordinary rates. The new editor wants to get out a daily paper ■unlike anything ever attempted in" this country or Europe ; and his friends, relying upon the originality of his talents, anticipate immediate popularity for the Courant under hia management.
