The Postal Department has established two letter-receiving boxes in Seddon street, one at Mr Seddon’s store, which will be cleared daily at 11 a.m. and 4.30 6 m., and another on the premises of Mr arnett, chemist, which will also be cleared daily, at 11.15 a.m. and 4.45 p.m. At the last-named place, postage stamps can be obtained.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr E. Barff, J.P., Frank Johnson was fined 10s and costs, or 24 hours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness. The same prisoner was further charged with using obscene language in a public street at Kumara, and mulct in a similar penalty. His Worship cautioned him as to his future conduct, and the consequences that would ensue if he further misconducted himself,

Up to midnight to-night, his Worship the Mayor will issue electoral rights at his residence, Seddon street; and at Dillman’s Town, Mr Stanhope, hairdresser, will be in attendance for the same purpose.

In the Supreme Court at Hokitika, yesterday, Mr South moved for a writ of habeas corpus to bring up James Morris, alias W. Smith, alias William Tennyson, under sentence in gaol, on a charge of stealing a horse, saddle, and bridle, the property of James Rugg, of Kumara. Mr South moved on papers duly filed. His Honor granted the application. Messrs Button and Purkiss appeared for Morris. Both learned gentlemen stated that the facts were not disputed. On behalf of the prisoner they both intended to enter a plea of autrefois acquit.

A large number of our local rifle-shots will probably visit the range to-morrow, it being the first day of class-firing for the Volunteer year ending March 31, 1878. At Moonlight, on Wednesday, a miner named Gillespie died suddenly. The Earl of Lewes is at present traveling in the North Island. The New Zealand Herald is unfortunate with respect to typographical errors. It recently had to pay a large sum for printing “indigent” instead of “indignant” before the name of a well-known Dunedimte, and in a late issue we find the following : “ Two small typographical errors in the concluding portion of our report of the meeting of the Native Minister with the Natives at Tamahere produced very different meanings from those originally written. The sentence should have been : ‘ After a few further compliments and the partaking of a kindly hospitality from Mr and Mrs Rice (Raiki), the party returned to Hamilton.’ The . words in italics were erroneously printed ‘complaints’ and ‘kind of,’ which considerably altered their real purport.” “ Don’t you think you have a prejudice against the prisoner 1” asked a lawyer of a witness. “Very likely,” was the reply ; “I have caught him stealing two or three times.”
