[press agency. I Auckland, March 16, A destructive fire occurred at Eden Terrace last night. Sinter’s brewery and two houses were destroyed. The damage done to other buildings is great. The insurance in the New Zealand Office is £1300; Union, £885; National, £SOO. A steam threshing machine was working at Whau, when a man’s foot was caught in the hopper by the revolving drum. The leg was broken off above the thigh, and the man expired. At Patea, Major Atkinson addressed a large number of his constituents last night. A voce of confidence was passed. He also received a vote of confidence at Manutahi. Fielding, March 16. A rich specimen of gold, in quartz, has been found in Nakin’s Creek, near Mr Halcombe’s residence, at Fielding, Manawatu. Christchurch, March 16. At a meeting re the New Guinea expedition, last night, it was stated that 32 persons had already joined. March 17. Sir George Grey addressed a very large meeting on Saturday night at the Odd Fellows’ Hall. On rising, Sir George received an ovation lasting several minutes. The substance and scope of his address were the same as previous ones in Dunedin and Wellington. He spoke two hours. There were several other speakers, including Messrs Stevens, M.H.R., Rolleston, and Turnbull. Mr Montgomery moved an amendment, that Sir George Grey’s Government has the confidence of the meeting. Some warm discussion occurred with regard to the delay in publishing the despatch conferring" the the title of “ Honorable” on Judges Chapman and Gresson, Ultimately, Mr Montgomery’s amendment was carried amidst loud and prolonged cheers. The meeting lasted over three hours, and was unmistakeably demonstrative throughout in favor of Sir Geo. Grey. Timaru, March 16. Before leaving Timaru Sir George Grey received a telegram from Sir John Coode, who was leaving Melbourne for New Zealand by the first steamer, and would probably arrive at Timaru about 20th April. Dunedin, March 16. Judge Harvey was yesterday installed as P.G.M, of Masons for the Middle Island. There were about three hundred Masons present including visitors from various lodges in the North and South Islands, A banquet took place after the ceremony. In the Jones’ libel case to-day, the Judges upheld the demurrer to plea of justification ; the only plea left now is the general one of not guilty • the trial of facts will be heard on Monday. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. GREYMOUTH RACES. Greymouth, March 18. The races are postponed until tomorrow, on account of the fresh in the river covering a part of the Race Course. The races will commence to-morrow. Nine horses start for the Handicap ; six for the Hurdles; twelve for the Railway Stakes, The entries are large, and there will lie a big field for every race. There is a crowd in town. Nelson, March 18. In the District Court this morning, before Judge Broad, Florence Joseph pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault, and was sentenced to six»years’ penal servitude. Grahamstown, March 18. The Governor is expected to visit here, on Friday to open a new County road to Ohinemnri. A citizens’ hall and banquet are expected to take place.

O amaru, March 18. According to the Census returns the population of Oamaru is 4977 ; showing an increase of over 2000 in four years.
