At the inquest held on the late large fire here, a verdict that ;there was no evidence of its origin was returned. At a meeting of the Harbor Board last night, it was agreed to authorise the Chairman to telegraph to Sir George Grey, that the Board is willing to guarantee £l5O for the purpose of securing a survey and report on the harbor by Sir John Goode. Dunedin, March 13.

At an auction sale to-day, Pungawerewere sold to Mr E. Perkins, Auckland, for 120 guineas, and Xantippe to the same gentleman for 66 guineas. Templeton was passed in at 750 guineas, and Titania at 360.

An important case was heard at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day. The South Canterbury Licensed Victuallers’ Association prosecuted a storekeeper named Edmund Cornish for slygrog selling, when the defendant was fined £5 and costs.

A letter from Mr Ballance says that hospitials and charitable institutions throughout the Colony are managed on no fixed principle, and it is absolutely neccesary to place them on a more satisfactory' footing. In large towns the Government maintained no satisfactory control but paid the expenditure. In future it was proposed to place charitable aid institutions, wherever it was possible, under the direct control and management of Municipalities, and to subsidise them to the extent of 20s on every 20s of paid up subscriptions, and of moneys contributed from the borough fund, without any deduction whatever, subsidies from surrounding countries, may bp,arranged by making a pro rata sum per head, for country patients. - •

Oamabu, March 14,

Sir George C-’rey was warmly welcomed here. He addressed the largest public meeting ever held here, and spoke for two hours, advocating a change in the incidence of taxation, manhood suffrage, and a land tax. A unaminous vote of confidence in Sir George Grey’s policy and the Government was carried at the close.
