[press agency. 1 Christchurch, February 15. Quam Yan, a Chinaman, was charged with rape, and was further remanded to-day, in order to procure an interpreter from Dunedin. The immigrants. per Wanganui were all landed to-day, and most of them are already engaged. Thirty cases of contagious- diseases were reported to the Board of Health to-day. The medical oflicer stated time many of them might be traced to the adulteratim of milk, and tuged the Board to have a clause inserted in the Public Health Act to have a strict supervision over dairies. At the same meeting the powers of the Board of Health, so far as the City is concerned, were re-transferred to the City Council. Dunedin, February 15. Bishop Neville leaves for England by ship Otaki to-morrow. At the conclusion of a confirmation service in St. Paul's Church, last night, the Bishop was presents d with an address wishing himself and Mrs Neville a safe journey. The Bishop goes home to attend the Lambeth Conference, and will return in a few months. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. Dunedin, February 16. It is expected that a procession, to take place to-morrow of those who have taken the Temperance pledge from father Hennebery will number quite two thousand. Nelson, February 16. A fatal accident under curious circumstances has occurred at Goldeu Bay. Ihomas Scott was playing " see saw," i.e., standing back to back with another man with their arms hooked, eicb alternately raising the other, when the man who was lifting Scott gave way under him, and Scott fell on the back of his head, breaking his neck. Scott's wife committed scicide by shooting herself three, years ago, owing to the brutal treatment of her husband. Wellington, February 15. At the nomination of candidates to represent the City vacancy in the House of Representatives to-day the following gentlemen \*ere proposed :—Kdward Pearce (old member) ; Win. Hutcheson, late mayor; G. R. Barton, barrister. Mr Barton's son addressed the electors on behalf of his father. The show of bauds was largely in favor of Mr Barton. The show of hands for Mr Pearce was the smallest. A poll will be taken on Monday.
