ARAHURA ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Board was held on Monday, 11th instant. Present: Mr Griffith (in the chair), Messrs Sandle, Hannan, and M‘Alpine. . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence.—From the County Chairman, asking why his letter of the 12th of December was not replied to, and informing the Board that, by the amended Counties Act, the Chairman of a Road Board was liable to a penalty of £5 for refusing information to a County Council. Also from the Union Bank, Kumara; and from James M‘Redtnond. Mr Sandle moved, and Mr Griffith seconded “ That the Secretary be instructed to write to the County Chairman and inform him that the communication to which he refers has not been received by this Board, and that this Board considers it a great piece of presumption on the part of an officer of the Council to issue threats in the tone in which the letter of the Bth instant was written.” Mr Hannan moved an amendment which was seconded by Mr M'Alpiue “ That the Secretary write to the County Chairman and forward copy of letter of the Ith January, asking if the threat therein contained was authorized by him, and stating that the letter to which he refers was not received.”

The original motion was carried. Mr Saudle moved, and Mr M‘Alpine seconded, “ That the motion of previous meeting directing the Secretary to summon a ratepayers’ meeting to test the legality of the rate, be* not acted upon until the Borough Council of Kumara be asked to join in the expense of trying a test case, and that the Secretary write and ask the Borough Council accordingly."—Carried. Mr Sandle moved “ That the whole of the tenders be opened if all the deposits be paid in prior to opening.”— Carried. Mr M‘Alpine moved, Mr Hannan seconded, “ That the tender of Jeremiah Gilbert, at .£398 17s 6d for horse track to the beach be accepted; and that in the event of Mr Gilbert not taking up the contract, that the next tender, viz., that of Jame, M'Redmond be accepted, at £4lB ss.”—Carried. Mr Hannan moved, “ That a sum not exceeding £2O be expended in the reception of Sir George Grey; and that a Committee of the whole Board, two to form a quorum, be empowered to arrange matters.”—Carried. Mr Hannan moved, “ That Mr Barff, M.H.R., be invited to accompany this Board to the Arabura, to meet Sir George Grey on the occasion of his visit,”—Carried. The meeting then adjourned to Wednesday, February 20th, at 2 o’clock p.m.
