[press agency. I Wanganui, February 13, The Champion Foui’-oar Outrigger Race of four miles £l5O, was rowed to-day. There were several thousand people along the river bank. The Wellington boat, the well-known Dolly Varden, was the favorite, but the Heathcote, a Lyttelton boat, was backed heavily by the Wanganui people. The race was keenly contested, and there was a great deal of excitement. The Lyttelton boat won by several lengths, Dolly Varden second, Christchurch a good way behind. The Heathcote carried a coxswain, the Dolly Varden none. The four miles was rowed in 23 mins, llsecs. Lyttelton, February 13. The ship Wanganui, from London and Plymouth, with Government immigrants, has just arrived at Lyttelton. . LATEST UNPUBLISHED. Wellington, February 14. At a Cabinet Council this morning it was decided to appoint William Conyers Esq., Commissioner of Railways for the Middle Island, and to give him complete control of all constructed railways in that island. Westport, February 14. A mishap occurred on the Mount Rochefort Railway yesterday by a flood washing some ballasting off the line. The down train ran off the line in consequence, No one was hurt, but the passengers were much scared. Christchurch, February 14. A testimonial consisting of £72 has been forwarded to Inspector Feast now of Greymouth, and formerly of Christchurch, on the occasion of his removal to the West Coast. The money was subscribed by a few friends and well wishers.
