took the shape of an ugly condition attached to the handsome legacy, ytcH the effect that the legatee must be married within thirty-six hours or lose the fortune. The strange condition soon got wind, and suitors trooped up to the heiress's door:; for though the maiden was plain the fortune was pretty. But the young lady neither wished to be saddled with a husband nor deprived of the roubles, so in order to fulfil the testator's commands and preserve her freedom, she bit upon the following ex-: pediment Summoning an aged men-1 dicaut from his ■wonted post on the' adjoining church steps to her side, she proposed to him to enter the sacred building in the character of bridegroom, his services at the altar to be paid by three hundred roubles and a suit of new clothes—a written agreement ing drawn up setting forth that he should fill the role of husband on this one occasion only, and resign all ! conjugal rights over his youthful wife ' or her fortune once the ceremony was ac- | complished.
