THEATRE ROYAL.
Last night Mr and MrsMcrton Tavares made their first appearance in the Theatre Royal before, we regret to say, a poorhouse; This doubtless arose .from the fact that theirvisit to Rumara was very unexpected, and that many persons must have been unaware of the presence - of these talented artistes amongst us.' It is recorded of Matthews that in Bendigo he played to one man, and never played better; and although the appear* ’ mice of the theatre last night must have been very discouraging to Mr 'and Mrs Tavares, the performance was gone through as faithfully and with as much spirit aS though the house had been crammed, • a ■ circumstance which of itself Ought to se* cure them cordial support during; the re* mainder of their short stay. The curtain rose to the laughable comedy of “ The Happy Pair,” and the very opening of the smart and witty dialogue proved at once to the audience that Mr and Mrs Tavares stand higher in their profession than’any who have yet visited Kumara. the Tyell* known quarrel scene from “ The School for Scandal ” came next, followed by the “closet scene” from “Hamlet,” and con* eluding with the amusing sketch of “ The Bashful Cousin. ” These four mprceaux embrace a tolerably wide range of trionisra ; and the fact that it is impos* sible to say in which the greatest degree of excellence was exhibited ■ speaks volumes for the ability of the actors. The dresses are very fine, and the make-unin each instance was perfect, albeit that Mrs Tavarfes looked rather too j youfig and charming to suit the popular conception of Gertrude. This is a fault, however, which compensates itself, and carries its own recommendation on the we were about to add, the figure. This 1 evening Mr and Mrs Tavares again appear at the Theatre Royal, wheh an entirely ' new programme will be presented ; and we hope these talented and plucky artistes will meet with the support they s® -'wed deserve.
