[press agency. 1 Wellington, September 26. The New Zealand Times Company have purchased a large additional piece of land adjoining their present property, and intend enlarging the size of the ■paper and erecting new premises. It is stated in connection with the publication of the Waka Maori newspaper by the Government after the resolution of the House, that it be discontinued, that it has not cost the Government one penny for publication since that resolution was passed. The principal portion of the cost is defrayed by the Natives themselves, and the remainder by the private subscriptions of prominent European settlers. Auckland, Sept. 26. The criminal calender comprises one case of forging and uttering, one of uttering and forgery, one breaking and entering by three Maoris, one Maori horse stealing, one obtaining money under false pretences, also larceny as a bailee and issuing valueless cheques, one uttering and forgery, one breaking into dwelling, one assault with intent to rape, one manslaughter, and one assault with intent. It is still uncertain what will be done with the asylum patients. There is great difficulty in providing accommodation, and the quarantine station is unsuitable.' At the inquest on Maty Ann Fortune, burned at the late fire, evidence by the night nurse showed that the patients were not visited from 5 o’clock in the afternoon till the lire broke out about 4 in the m truing. > The fire commenced in Mrs Fortune’s cell; the watchman tried to break jin the door, but could not for some time. The deceased had often threatened to do for the building, but little qotice was taken of the threats. Tl?e inquest is, not concluded.
Sept. 27. At the inquest oh the woman, burned at the the evidence showed conclusively that the fire originated in her cell. She had taken some matches in the presence of visitors in the after* noon, and & search failed to discover theta. She had nevei been taken out ' of her cell. The jury returned a verdict “ that Mary Ann Fortune met her death hy burning, in a cell at tterWhsaLuhatic Asylum, but how, or means, the fire originated thwd is no evidence to show.” The jary appended--the following rider“ That the discipline carried out in the Auckland asylum is of a most defective character; and that the Government are -greatly to blame for the insufficient appliances there for the extinguishing of fire. ; Westport September The Mount Rochfort line, Wedpopci to Ngakawhau, was opened, The event was celebrated by a pnbUoi holiday.
