The Chamber of Commerce has passed resolutions supporting the Wellington Chamber’s' recommendation that a law: be enacted to stop absconding debtors by telegraph, when a creditor lodges sufficient security with the authorities as a, guarantee of bona fides. The Chamber also forwarded the opinion of t Mr Hesbeth, solicitor, embodying vari- ‘ ous recommendations and showing that •there is absolutely no legal means of stopping a debtor, even when it is known ..he is going away. Oapt. Grey, of the Customs has arrived at Russell: he reports that he lauded on Kirikiri and the adjacent islands which he searched thoroughly, but he found no trace of wreckage. Court to-day, John Chalter was convicted of having in big possession a still and other apparatus, suitable for distilling purposes, and was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment. The plant was discovered by the police and the Sub-Collector of Customs iujChalter’a house, situated ou alarm leased by him at lnch Almer, from the Hon. M. Holmes. Mr Omeagher defended him, and gave notice of appeal, on the ground that the Magistrate sgg-' gested and allowed evidence tp be adduced, to prove Chalter’s occupation of the house after Mr Balmer, the prosecuting counsel, had dosed his case.
