The mayor said that a subject had been brought under his notice viz., the taking back of the Court House, 9 or 10 chains from the street. He had been informed that this was done, because there was not sufficient frontage to the Main-street for the Court and the Post Office. There is-a street I|' chain wide by the reserve which is not required to be so wide : sufficient space could be taken-' from it, to give room for the Court House. He read the Clause of the Act which allowed the Council to widen or narrow streets <fec,, by resolution passed at a special, meeting. The street is not yet made and is ; to run. from Main to Cashman-streets, and is not continued on the other side of Main street. The resolution would have to be confirmed by a meeting of the Council to be held not less than, four weeks later. Cr, George proposed that the Council ask the Minister of Works not to have the Court House put into a back street. Cr. Ancher asked if it was not necessary to give notice of the matter. The Mayor said he bad not yet declared the business to be extraordinary business. He wished to bring the matter before the Council to-day, and communicate with the Minister of Public Works, and get his consent to having Camp-street narrowed for the purpose of having the Court House erectedlupon the part, of the street not required. Cr. HiMoaasked.'f the Council could' transact at .a special meet ing business nut

specified on the circular summoning Councillors. Cr. Bulstrode said there "was no special business mentioned 'on the circular. Cr. George’s motion was altered to the effect that. the Clerk telegraph to Minister of Worts and ask him to have the Court House erected en the northern portion of Camp-street, as in the opinion of this Council it would be inconvenient to have it erected 9 chains back in the bush: also to have the Court House enlarged by 20 feet and a witnesses’ room provided for the use of suitors and witnesses. Or. Anchor seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The Mayor moved that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to the Engineer in Chief, 0. Y. O’Connor Esq. The Mayor laid before the Council specifications of work in Seddon-street, which had been contracted for with the Arahura Road Board. Designs for seals were laid upon the table. The Mayor gave notice of the following business for next Thursday. “To move that a rate of one shilling in the pound be struck according to the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act.” He said that under the 109th section of the Act a statement of estimated expenditure &c., must be laid before the Council.
