[press agency.] Wellington, August 27. The Waka Maori libel case commenced in the Supreme Court this morning, before the Chief Justice. Counsel for plaintiff are Messrs Macassey, Stout and Bell; for the defence Messrs Connelly, Buller and Chapman. Mr Macassey is now opening the case fop the plaintifl. A good deal of interest is taken.and the court is crowded in every part. WESTPort, August 25. There was an outbreak of fire at the Empire Hotel early this morning, but it was promptly suppressed. An influentnl meeting of Catholics passed resolutions condemning the religious and compulsory clauses of the Education Bill, and asserting the opinion that the onlv fair and equitable settlement of the difficulty is in giving Catholic schools payment by results, and on the numerical attendance.
