. "Wellington, August 18. The schooner Elibank Castle sailed from Oamaru for Greymouth on Saturday, laden with breadstufls. Inveboargill, August 18. At a meeting of it was resolved; that a Benevolent Institution should* be provided for Southland, and in influential committee was appointed X) take further action in the matter. Nelson, August 17. It is reported from Farewell Spit hat a quantity of wreckage was lying ihere, apparently torn from the bow of some vessel. There are pieces of rail 20ft by 12in by 4in of bright hard wood, 0 like mahogany or teak, with planking attached, on which are cut bhe letters A.NiG?iO.F.A.G.A.S.A. Also, a female figure-head, sft high, painted white with a wreath of roses round the head. At the Queen Bee inquiry to-day, Captain Davis attributed the wreck to error in the compasses, which'never worked well all the voyage, observations some times showing them to be two and a half points out. Dunedin, August 20. A fire broke out in Weir and Samson's ' River-street, on Saturday night. It was speedily extinguished, but not before considerable damage had been done. The amount of insurances is not known. Crossley's fellmongery, Green Ifland, was burned down last night.
Port Chalmers, August 20 Scarlet lever has broken out. Fire cases are reported, since Saturday. There has been one death this morning,
