A letter, offering to accept £25 as compensation for the Dillman’a road taking a portion of claim from Clarke and Co. was read. The secretary informed the Board that the committee appointed to consider claims for compensation had decided to recommend another route, as the claims were large enough to pay for making the road where they now propose. Mr Seddon spoke in favor of the latest track. It was nearly level the whole way. After considerable discussion it was agreed to grant the £25 compensation to Messrs. Clarke and Co. Mr Seddon moved, that for the future no claims for compensation be entertained by the Board, but that claimants be left to their legal remedy; cases where the Board, by a two-thirds vote, agreed to the claim to be excepted. The Council had maintained the Greenstone and Christchurch roads during the time .between December and the end of March. He deprecated any action which might cause discord between the Council and Board. He could not see how the money could be got from the Council, as it bad now been put into their fund. The chairman and Mr Griffith supported the resolution. Mr Seddon moved, as an amendment, that the question stand .over till , next meeting, aud that the secretary/ ask the Government how much had; been paid during the time in dispute. V V The secretary said he had writtenpbut could not obtain the information; Mr Seddon argued that the CouncilTilkd acted liberally with the Board, and quoted the amounts expended on the district, coming to about £4,000.
