The following Is a copy of the letter for-: warded by the- Chairman of the 1 County of Westland to County Chairman""*! Grey,' with regard to the question of erecting a biidge across the Teremakau river :—" Sir—l have the honor to bring under your notice the question of the bridging of the Teremakau upon the Gr.ey and Hokitika road, and with regard to the necessity of the work", L will take it for granted that no difference of opinion e xists« It then becomes necessary to define the extent of the responsibility of the adjoining Counties of Grey and Westland. The southern boundary of the Grey County is described in the first schedule of the Counties. Act as the left bank of the Teremakau river. This definition, although vague, I am instructed, indicated the south bank of that river, thereby including the whole. river-bed in the Grey County, but I am inclined to the opinion that the County Council of Westland would willingly co-operate with the County Council of Grey in the construction of a bridge to the extent of defraying haH the cost of same, as the distribution of the cost should depend more on the convenience afforded than upon any consideration of arbitraiy boundary lines. With regard to the cost; it seems worthy of consideration whether combined action of the Councils would not be advisable 'mder Part IX. of Hie Counties Act. Although the course of procedure involves a great deal of trouble, and some expenditure, still, 1 am of opinion, that the money, would be obtainable without difficulty, and might be secured from tolls from bridges—if it is decided to levy tolls—an annual amount from goldfields revenue, or special rate, without interference with the ordinary revenue of the County. Would you, therefore, give the matter your consideration and favour me with a reply at an your obedient servant, H. L. Robinson, County Chairman.
