ARAHURA ROAD BOARD.
[to the editor.] I am aware that a very large number of persons in this district profess to be much disgusted with the action of the Arahura Road Board, but I cannot close my eyes to the fact that, In many instances, that body is blamed for the faults of others. To illustrate my meaning, I will refer to the question of the drainage of Kumara. On the 16th of April, the County Chairman wrote to the Chairman of the 'Road Board, informing him that the County Council had, by resolution, agreed to subsidise with an equal amount, any moneys raised in any Road District, or portion of district, by speciel rates, “ or otherwise,” for the purpose of constructing drainage works. The County Chairman, in the same letter, informed the Chairman of the Board, that the resolution wan arrived at with special reference to Kumara, the drainage of which township, the Council understood, was very defective, and they would gladly contribute .£1 for £1 raised, to improve the drainage. In reply to this letter, the Board wrote that they had determined to proceed with the drainage of Kumara, and, after describing the proposed plan of drainage, asked to what extent the Council would subsidize the work. The Council, when this, reply was before them, arrived at no decision, as it was stated that the Council had only agreed to give half the cost if a special rate was struck, forgetting that the words “ or otherwise” had been inserted in the resolution. Individual members of the Council have since stated that the simple fact is that they have no funds. If such is the case, whatfwas the use of passing the resolution, and forwarding it, with favorable comments to the Board 1
