Captain Giles reports finding the supposed wreck of the General Grant, after severe fcxertiona and risk, in twelve fathoms of water. Diving operations are not begun. The captain feels confident of getting the gold on his return; and reports the Gazelle as having behaved admirably in a gale experienced since leaving the Auckland Islands. Wellington, May 9. The Inspector of Police has received instructions to despatch a mounted constable to Palliser Bay, and prosecute a search for any wreckage there. It is thought that the wreckage already found there is that of the Kate Brain, supposed to be lost.
