[PHES3 AGENCY.] London, May 8,. Mr Gladstone, in the House of Commons, unexpectedly withdrew the obnoxious portion of bis resolution relative to the position that England should take with respect to the Eastern difficulty, and his announcement of the withdrawal caused a scene in the House. The Marquis of Partington, on behalf of the Liberal party, accepted the amended resolution.
Mr Gladstone, in a lengthy speech, vigorously attacked .the. policy of the Government, An amendment, tantamount to a rejection of Mr Gladstone's resolution, •was moved on behalf of the Government,, by Mr Wolff. The Secretary for Home Affairs said that the Czar was answerable for the rupture whic:h had taken place between Russia and Turkey; but if Constantinople were not attacked, no question as to English interests in the East would arise. The present policy of England would be to protect the Suez Canal, conserve English interests in Egypt, and forbid any interference with the neutrality of the Dardanelles and the B>sphorus. It is reported that Germany baa increased the number of her troops in Alsace and Lorraine.
