Dunedln, March 31. The Guardian gives the following account of a scene between the Hon, Mr Reid,-and Mr Proudfoot. The latter called on the Minister for a settlement of the statement of the well-known arbitration award, for which he had given time to the Provincial Government, owing to its embarrassed condition, although he might have demanded immediate payment. The instalment had fallen due a day or two ago, and the contractor waited on the Minister voucher in hand, and urged payment. " I'll shove this roll of papers down your throat" said"the Minister.. "Do it, I should like to see you," said the contractor.' "You're a blackguard to talk to me in that way" said the Minister. " You're a doubled-dyed blackguard to talk to me in that way," retorted the contractor, " I come to you as a citizen, aud you must hear me." "f£ you talk to me in that way I will send for a constable," said the Minister. " Send for him, said the contractor, I'll wait here for him." But, after waiting a few minutes, he retired before the arrival of the policeman.
April 2. The Jockey Club, on Saturday, disqualified a bookmaker named Coleman from appearing on the Dnnedin course, or being interested in any horse run at the Club Meeting. The reason given for this is unfair practices.
"Wellington, March 31. The Government Printing Office has just printed a duty stamp, which represents £2134, the probate duty paid on the will of the late Sir Donald M'Lean, the property devised being estimated at £106,700. .
Auckland, March 31. i Thomas Russell, to-day, purchased two thousand five hundred shares in the! Kurunui Hill mine, at a pound. The'
shares were unallotted, and sold by the company. As soon as the name of the purchaser become known, shares ad.. vanced seven shillings. April 1. A large three-masted vessel sailing, but occasionally shewing smoke, apparently a steamer disabled, passed the Bay of Islands, southwards, at nine this morning, supposed to be a mail steamer. Grahamstown April 1. The gold returns for the month are— Hamaki, 26,020, ounces ; Cbromandel, 2700 ounces ; Monatairi, last three days, 5000 ounces. Christchurch, April 2. There are sixteen cases on the Supreme Court criminal calendar, including three for embezzlement; two for forgeries; three for arson; and one for housebreaking. There was a fire last night, caused by the explosion of a parafine lamp. It destroyed two seven-roomed houses and damaged another. The total loss is .£1553. The insurances are—New Zealand, £4OO ; South British, £2OO ; National, £4OO. The fire originated in the house of Father Zacharias, a Hebrew minister, who loses a lot of valuable Hebrew works, which it is almost impossible to replace.
