Kiapara on December 10th. Wu bear that the be=t percentage of lambs from fl cks in this district has been secured by Messrs Thomas BroS., of Kiuobaku, who tallied 120 per cent. It is officially stated that the s.s. Waiotiihi will not re place the s.s. Waitangi on the Onehunga-Raglan-Kawhia-Waiiara run until after the holidays.
An eff >rt is being made to start the export of fish from Kawhia to Waitara, andlbe first consignment will be sent away by the s.s. Waitangi next week.
The weather during the past week has been ideal—lovely warm, sunshiny days and nice cool nights. Picnicing has been indulged in, the favourite spot, as usual, being Rikaunui. The firs‘ contract for widening a portion of tho Waitetuna-Aotea road (for which a loan was raised) has been completed by Mr Jas. Dungan. Elsewhere lenders are called for spreading 400 yards of metal on this road. The fine weather lately experienced has been much appreciated by the settlers and shearing is going ahead at a great pace, a Urge quantity of wool being brought to the wharf shed al m ist every d >y. But the appreciation of Go weather h nothing iu compariFiiKi ti the gratification expressed at ibe ike iu the price of wool, as that will mean a good sum of money to tbe owners uf sheep. May the rise not only continue but materially increase. Ae a result of the decision of S.M. Cutten at the Court of Enquiry into the recent County elections on Wed-nc-d»y last a fresh election for tbe wbr le of the County is necessitated. A special meeting of the old Council will bo held on Wednesday at which Mr Barton will be appointed returning [officer. The election wM take place | nil >ut tbe end of the year. It is probable that Crs Jonathan, Babbage and Noonan will be re-elected unopposed ■ fur tbe IGwbia, Awaroa and Te Kuri | Ridings respectively, but it is thought ■ that Cr Norton may again offer his i services to tbe Matakowhai ratepayers. ' There are sure to be two keen contests iv Kinohaku between Cr Shew and Mr HayL ck for (he Waiharakeko Riding and Messrs J. P, Wright and Kearns lor Tftbnro*

We acknowledge with thanks the receipt, from the Government Printer, of the Agricultural Department’s re port for the year 1909. On Wednesday about a telegrams were sent to Mr Jennings. M.P., from settlers interested and Kawhia business people urging that the erection of the Kinohaku Marokopa Telephone be proceeded with at once.
The iron work for the bridge over Marokopa River at Te Anga has ar rived at Kawhia aud will be delivered at Marokopa next week. Tbe bridge is to be a suspension one and will be erected by Mr J. E. Scott and party. Kawhia was very busy on Wednesday, there being a large number of both pakehas aud natives in tbe town. Tbe influx was occasioned by the Court of Enquiry into the recent County election, and the Maori election.
How things have changed I Some little time ago goods for Marokopa had to be sent from Kawhia via Waitara, but last week'a wool press arrived here from Waitara addressed “ Marokopa, via Kawhia." The alteration can be traced to the Northern S.S. Co. and tbe-e.s. Rothesay. After many months word was received by the County Clerk on Monday last that tbe loan of £250 for improvements to tbe streets of Kawhia was now available. No time is to be wasted in putting the work in band, tenders for two of the contracts being advertised in this issue.
There is going to be a gay time at Marokopa on New Year’s Day and the day following when two days all round sports and aquatics will be held, tbe programme of which is advertised elsewhere. Tbe proceeds are in aid of tbe new ball, which will be opened on the night of January Ist. The unusual snght of a bolt in Ka whia was witnessed this (Friday) afternoon. Miss Quin left her horse, attached to a gig, outside Chase's store, and something startling th. ani mal it made off down Jervois Street, but was caught near tbe wharf by Moke before any damage was done.
The rainfall for the month of November registered at Kawhia by Mr Pettit was 235 m. For the same month of 1907 2.98iu. fell and 8.93 in. in 1906. Already the dry weather is affecting the gardens, whilst water for domestic purposes in some instances is running out, the town pump even now being brought into use.

Jennings, MP., who is now in Wellington. The matter cif completion of the Marokopa telephone and the delay thereon is being enquired into.*’
On tho point of going to press we received information trnrn the County Clerk, Mr Barton, that the loan of £2OOO for extending the wharf at Kawhia and providing landing conveniences at Oparau, Hautare, and Kmohaku, is now avai able for expenditure, and that such portion as is immvdiately required will be paid on application. The latest return for the Western District Maori election states that Kai. hau is leading by over 500. The voting at the booths in tbe locality of Kawhia was—Kawhia : Kaihau 80, J?epene 28, Heuheu 4; Kinohaku : Kaihau 20, Pepene 11; Taharoa: Kaihau 89, Pepene 9 ; Hauturu, Kaibou 49 ; Pepene 4. The influence of Mahuta is too strong about here, as the figures show, The residents along the main coach roid were somewhat startled on Tues day to see a motor car running along that thoroughfare. The car was occupied by Messrs E. C. Cutten, 8.M., H.. T. Gillies and A. Swarbrick, who were engaged io tbe election enquiry. Hamilb>n was left at 845 a.m , and the furry reached at 280 p.m., after a. steady and enj >yable trip. On W- dnesdoy the party got away from tbe ferry at 3 p.m., expecting to arrive nt their destination about; 9 o’clock. Thia is the first oeca ion upon which a b ireolesH vehicle has been used on the K twhia-Pirongia road and shows how it h»s been improved. If some metal ling was done the road in question could be motored i>pon both summer and winter.
