THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1908 Local and General.

On Sunday next the Rev. Clarke, of Te Awamutu, will canduct Church of England services at Kawhia at 11 a.m. and 7 80 p.m.

The flax mill at Nokuhakarei is now working at top, but it is not expected that scutching will be commenced before Christmas.

The wo kof removing the sawmill from its present position on the Marokrpi River to a site on the Kairimu Cire k, is being pushed along rapidly. Pit sons who require a first-class piano ‘>n very easy terms are advised to read the new advertisement of the London and Berlin Piano Co., on onr back page.* On the way up from Waitara this (Friday) morning, the s.s. Waitangi called at Nnkuhakarei, landing a good quantity of stores and picking up 21 bales of tow.

By advertisement the Northern S.S. Co. announce that there will be reduced fares bat ween Kawhia and Waitara or Onehunga for the Christmas and N?w Year holidays. We are pleased to be able to report that tbu supply of cream to the Kawhia Butter Factory is steadily increasing. The machinery is working splendidly and the butter produced of good quality.

Next Wednesday, the 2nd iosf.,tbe election of ‘be member for tbe Westera Maori District takes place. There is a strong feeling locally against the silting member, Heuare Kaihau, and it is certain that Pepene Ekefone will poll well in this district. On Friday last, at Auckland, four sections in Kawhia, owned by the firm of L. D. Nathan and Co , were offered for sale by auction, but tbe reseryes were, not reached.. Afterwards Mrs \V. M i'g»n purchased section upon which there is a coltage, for £llO.

Con.-idetable dissatisfaction w.is expressed during the recent Tuumarunui t-L.cti n at the fact that there was no polling b >oth at Marokopa, which meant that over 25 people were disfranchised. How the mistake occurred is indeed hard to explain, as at the 1905 election Marokopa was an important booth. As far as this district is concerned tha arrangements for the contest were far from satisfactory.

We learn, on yery good authority, that tbe s.s. Waiotahi will very shortly rep! ce tbe s.s. Waitangi on the One hunga-Raglan Kawhia-Waitara run, and that tbe steamer at present trading here will be removed to Auckland. It is stated that the Waiotahi will run the same time table as tbe Kia Ora did. 4'ue steamer is spacious and a good sea boat, whilst tbe accommodate nis excellent. It is not yet known wheiher tbe Waitangi’s popular skipper and bis courteous officers will remain on thio eoMt.

I We acknowledge the receipt of tbe I * Statutes for 1908 from the Govern- | ment Printer, Wellington. < 1 j On our front page Messrs Jonathan i limited notify that they have now on view a splendid assortment of Christmas goods. Tbe Te Rau-a-moa Batter Factory >e great Rune this year the sap, ly being now over 700 gallons pt r day and is still increasing. As we an) going to press a farewell social is being tendered to Mr and Mrs Torrell in Scott’e Hall, nt which about 30 residents are present. Tbe best percentage of lambs in the district so far reported comes from Kinubnkn, end in 2-tooth flocks. Mr J. Shaw tsliyed 110 per cent, and Mr J. P. Wright slightly over 100.

Mr Morris, Stock and Noxious Weeds Inspector, paid n visit to Ka whia during the week, and as a result it is very likely that some of the absentee section-holders will be notified to clear their holdings of weeds.

A choir has been farmed in connection with the local Congregational Church, about 15 Indies and gentlemen having taken the matter up with much enthusiasm. Mrs Ashford ho* been appointed conductor and Mrs Chase organist. Wednesday next is likely to be an interesting day in Kawhia, for that is the day fixed for the enquiry into the petition lodged for the nullification of •he recent County elections. Mr C. E. Cutten, S.M.. will adjudicate. The matter was discusced in committee at ihe Council peeling on Wednesday, whan it Wafi decided not to engage a solicitor to defend the suit, which was left in the hands of Ore Shaw, Jonathan and Noonan.

Tbe public of this district have never been served better on the overland route than they are at the present time, and since Mr Sam Stewart has been driving it has become quite popular with travellers. It is worthy of note that last winter was the first ocCQ ’ion upon which the mail? bad been conveyed by vehicle. This performance is highly creditable to Mr Stewart and bis horses—a fact that will be readily admitted by those who know the road.

Speaking at Carterton, Mr J. A" Gilruth, Chief Government Veterinarian, stated that he approved of rugging cows where there was no shelter, but was nf opinion that ruga should be taken off in the day time, when tbe animals get exercise by muving about. If a rug was considered necessary in some localities iu the daytime, it should be lighter than the one put on at night. Some objected to rugs. He could not support tbnt opinion; only they should not be left on too long or allovred to become dirty next to the skin.
