KAWHIA HARBOUR RAILWAY.
(to the editor.) Sir,—lt is with pleasure I noted recently that tbe trial survey of tbe Mein Trunk Kawhia Harbour Railway has been granted and chat such has been accomplished in a short time is highly gratifying. When this movement was started 1 remember the Settler throttling the question of route, urging that that be left to tbe engineers who were the peeple beat able to decide the matter. Although many routes were talked about none were openly advocated. Yet as soon as the survey is promised a c >uple of settlers of Oparau—Messrs Elliott aud Perham—calmly write to tbe Hamilton Chamber of Commerce asking that bidy to use its influence to get the line through the Matakowbai block of na tive land, then, I suppose, down the stream. As a settler in tbe vicinity of the Kawhia Harbour I take strong ex ception to this. Suppose every couple of neighbours did the same thing wba’ a turmoil there would be. In the past I have written and talked a lot about this rail way (and have paid a few shillings in subscription fees also) but have never yet talked of route. Ibe lieye that if we remain quiet we will get our railway all the quicker, aud that is the reason for my taking excep tion to a commencement being made n a battle of routes.—Yours, etc ,
