The Taumaranui Election.

MR JENNINGS RETURNED. JENNINGS (G) 3037 BOVVATER (O) 1216 Majority for Jennings, 1801. There was very little interest taken in the above election, as it waa recognised that Mr Jenoinga’ return was assored. When the result of tbe Kawhia Voting was announced there was not a single person to hear the numbers. What a difference from the last election ’ Even when the returns were coming through to the Post Office Tanmaranui was seldom enquired for. The following table shows the voting round the harbour both at this and

•This booth was at Marukopa. VVe congratulate Mr Jennings upoo bis success and recognise thit we have iu bim a most indefatigible representative who will ably bring under the notice of both tho House and the various Departments ibe disabilities under which tbe back block settlers exist. We would u<>r be iu the least surprised to find Mr Jeuninga appointed Minister of Public Works, a position for which there is uoue more suitable than the member for Taumaranui.

The yoting in this district showed that Oppositionists are still very numerous, as without organisation whatever Mr Bo water only scored 63 votes less than his formidable opponent. A great change was, however, noticeable in Kawhia township. Last election there were 117 vote* recorded, 34 for tbe Government aud 83 for tbe Opposition, whilst upon this occasion only 66 votes were cast, 45 being for the Government and 21 for the Opposition. Te Rau-a-moa kept up its position as a Government stronghold, but the surprise of the district was tbe Opposition block vote at Waiharakeke.
