The Hon. W. W. M‘Cardle, M.L.C., paid a business visit to Kawhia during the week.

Mr Weingott, a piano tuner with a good reputation, announces that he will visit Kawhia about the 18th met. It is expected that the Commissioner of Crown Lands will pay a visit to this district next week or the week after.
Oa the trip from Waitara at the early part of thia week the a.s. Waitangi made the journey to this port in 6| hours —a record. The timber for tbe bridge over the Marokopa River ai Te Anga is at present lying on tbe Kawhia wharf, awaiting transhipment. By telegraph we learn that Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P., has information to tbe effect that the school at Rakanui will be built thia summer.

The County elections took place on Wednesday last, but did not cause any excitement. For the Kawhia Riding Dr C Campbell Jenkins opposed the re election of Cr Jonathan, but was not successful. In the Matakowhai Riding there were four Messrs Davies and Elh.w being returned. Or Norton was rejected.
On Tuesday nex-, the 17 b inst, the election for of the House of Representatives will take place. As far as Taumaruaui is cr earned very little interest is being shown in this district as to the result, i being generally recognised that air unings will ba returned, though if .dr Bowater bad visited us earlier ic is quite certain that* he, would have gained a good number of votes. The courts were iu good order, and played splendidly.- Good form wm ehown by tbe players, which augurs well for the success of the season. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, tbe gathering al together being very enjoyable. There were only about a dozen members present at tbe meeting of the Medical Club on Monday afternoon. The Secretary (M; J. K. Newton) reported that duriog the past year there were tbe most members there had ever been. The matter of tbe arrangement of subscribers who did not join at the commencemen of the year, and did not previously belong co the club, was held over till tbe next meeting, in about a fortnight’s time. A vote of thanite was ace >rded to Mr Pettit for advertising tbe membership list free of charge, and also to Mr J. K. Newton for acting as eacrotaay.
Last Saturday night there was a very happy little gathering at Mrs Morgan’s residence, “ St. Elmo,” when tbe members of the Kawhia County Council entertained the officials and tbe Town Bo rl at dinner. The repast was served in Mrs Morgan’s best style, which is so well known that further comment is unnecessary. Tbe Chairman of the County (Cr Shaw) occupied tbe chair, and the Chairman of the Town Board (Ur J majhan) the vice-chair. Numerc '8 toasts were honoured and acknowledged, and altogether a very pleasant evening was spent. A vocal selection by Mr W. Morgon was greatly appreciated,
