AMERICAN CATHOLICS AND LIQUOR. (TO TUB KDITOB.) Sir,—lt may not be generally known that there are in America many powerful Roman Catholic temperance organisation?. In 1894 the Roman Catholic Bishop of Columbus, Ohio, forbade any society in hiadiocese to have a ealoon keeper or liquor dealer at the head or among its officers, and ordered that no new society should admit such persons to membership. Tbif order was sustained by the apostolic delegate at Washington, and although it applies only to the diocese referred to, it represents progressive Catholic
sentiment in our entire country. The Knights of C dumbos, tbe most inti aanrial Cathclic organisation in tha United States, a d the largest, bars all saloon keepers *and liquor dealers nf •very class from its membership.
