THOSE HARBOUR LIGHTS*
(TO THE EDITOR.) Sir,—When Dr Jcukius speaks as Chairman of the. Cemetery Board, on any question having reference to that Harbour of Refuge I at onoe feel inclined to submit to his ruling. His dixit on Kawbia harbour light* is however a different matter and I hardly can accept it as expert opinion. I will eimply deal with his one statement that baa any bearing on the subject, viz., “that the minimum cost (to the Board) of (nightly) lighting the beacons would be £lOO per annum.” When the Board advertise they will find responsible people willing to do the work for about £5O a year—the cost of oi! should not be more than £lO —say £6O to £65 a year. Of this sum the Northern S.S. Co., at present contribute 10s weekly, and as boats other than those of the Company occasionally use the lights, tbe reyenue from this source may be pat down as £3O a year—and growing—consequently the cost to the Board will be leas than 2a a night, not 4s 6d that the doctor correctly duba “all balderdash.” The doctor in a P.S. rather goes out of his way to remark that I “hide my ignorance under a nom de plume.” Just so, I neither seek publicity nor do I run a cemetery.—Yours, etc., TE MAIKA.
