Cottage Hospital Fund.

This fund is gradually dwelling, and the ladies who initiated tbe movement (Mesdsmes Morgan and Newton) are gratified at the snccsas of their efforts. Much valued assistance has already been rendered by various ladies and gentleman, and tbe fond seems to be uppermost in the minds of many, who are only too eager to initiato some movement to augment it. The footballers of the district have decided that they will not be behind, and have arranged to have a grand Fancy Dress Carnival on the 2nd and 3rd of next month, by which means they hope to realise a good sum. The fun will start on the Friday, when a fancy dtoftlkball will be held iu Scott’s ball, st wbich it is hoped, that everybody wiirpttend iu costa mo other than that ordicarily worn at dunces. It is stated that prizes will bo offered for the best dresses, and we have been asked to anuoauoe that offers of such wilt be acceptable. Oparau footballers are attending in force, and have promised to decorate the hall, and get tbe floor put in perfect order. On. Saturday a fancy dress football match will be held at Te Puru, which will, we have no doubt, be particularly funny —anyone scoring a try is to be promptly placed under arrest. Prize* aro to be given for this also, and a programme of laughable sports iu. being arranged. Tbe players .are to dress in tbe ball, and marcbp {headed, we believe, by a bush band) to tbe ground, tho procession starting at 2 p.m. sharp —anyone late will also be arrested,

The ticke‘ > for these two events are only fie and the promoters guarantee that those who attend on Saturday will see a comic opera, circus and menagerie ail in one. Then in the evening there is to be a juvenile fancy dress ball, for which event great preparrtions are being made by several ladies, wh®era spending much time, and also undertaking bard work, in making the ooeitumes, and drilling the children for floral and flag marches, maypole and otben* fanny dances. Coloured lights, etc., are to be used to give effect to the scene, and it is stated that successful as the last event ot this kind was, it will be overshadowed by the one to be held on October 3rd. The promoters trust that their efforts will have the wbole»hodrtad support of the residents of the town and district.
