We are in receipt of tho September number of “Good Cheer", published in Wanganui. Gazette the following blocks of Native land in this district have been bought, and are now proclaimed Crown Lands: —Kinohaka East No 2 Section la, 27a 3r7p; Kinohaka East No 2a, Section 20. The following example of Australian truthfulness is from the Sydney Newsintter“lt is said that a grave scandal occured in Auckland at the landing of the American officers. Admiral Sperry was introduced to Mahuta, the last of the Maori kings, and after friendly greetings the king whispered to the admiral, “You have’nt a bob on you, Cap, have you?” A dead block to the proceedings was prevented by the Governor diplomatically interfering and giving the Maori chieftain a plug of tobacco.

There are articles on the patent law of Great Britain the navies of the world, and the latest in regard to Brennan's Mono-rail, In the electrical department of a new phase in modern warfare, electric artillery, and to this interesting sectian must be added some new “wireless,” and an account of the great desideratum of all electricity users, the ideal primary battery. Several psges are devoted to building and invention, while the achievements of the pioneers in aerial navigation find fitting acknowledgement. In the Lande report for 1907-8 it u s'ated that in (he Waitomo, Awakiuo, Kawhia, Raglan and West Taupo Counties there has been a considerable influx of settlers and an increase in the number of cattle and sheep, notably the latter. A large area of bush has been felled, and of open country large areas have been ploughed and | urasaed. The area sown in grass last [ season has given great satisfaction, I and there arc strong evidences that once the laud is fairly grassed the pasfares will bo permanent. Tho exten riv» hush fires that occured, while fsmporarily ombarneing to the settler of small means will ulfimately prove of great advantage, the tires baying thoroughly cleared the ground of all rubbish. Where grass-seed has been sown over the new burns really good jmstures will be tho result. Schools, dairy factories and flax-mills are being erected, aud there is every sign of a progressive district, and every indication that the settlers who have gone into the baokblocks arc satisfied withj i heir holdiugu, Thu greater number nf tliuHo arc residing on the laud, but iu a few instances some selectors are non-resident, owing to tbe isolated position of the sections. This latter disability will be removed as soon as the roads are made within a reasonable distance of such lands.
