Kawhia Court House.

The opening of the new court House on the 26'.b ult, was an event of on small importance to Kawhiaites, and the gentlemen who comprised the bench on that day will no doubt iu tbe future, when Kawbia fulfils its destiny, and becomes a large distributing centre to a populous and fl >urisbing district, look back and think of the 26tb August as an historic occasion. Not many years have elapsed since litigants were compelled to travel fifty miles to invoke the aid of the law in settling their disputes. Tbe bolding of a Magistrates Court in Scott’s Hail in 1904 was no doubt a great boon to all persons interested in the dispensing of justice. As Kawbia progressed howeve, it was very evident that the makeshift in the hail must go and a proper building, suitable to the requirements of the town and district, be erected. On the Ist December of last year the contract for the new building was let to Messrs Henderson and Sons, of Ngaruawabia, and on June Ist of this year tbe building was completed, when it was admitted by all that a first-class courthouse had been erects! on the best site in Kawbia.

The building, which is entirely of kauri and rimu and of an architecture peculiar to most Government buildings (substantial but not over ornamental) has a frontage to Taiuui street of 80 feet by a depth of 82 feet. On entering the front door one turns to tbe right into the court room, which is 80 feet by 18 feet, and is at once struck with the completeness of detail, provision being made for interested parties solicitors, tbe press and the public. We consider witnesses have been es pecially favoured, their stand being placed so that after being worried and harassed by contending council they may seek relaxation by viewing thro ugb a window tbe Harbour and surrounding country. The magistrate certainly ought to be comfortable in tbe upholstered chair provided for him and we have no doubt but that Mr Northcroft would duly appreciate that chair after his three years experience in Scott’s Hall. On the weH side of tbe building are the Magistrates private room, tbe darks’ room, and the witnesses’ waiting room, each being well lighted and comfortably furnished. The contractors deserve every cradit for the way in which the building is completed, and tbe Public Works Department are to be complimented for the thoroughness of ibefumishihg. Ourooly regret on tbe opening of tho court was the absence of Mr H. W. Northcroft, 8.M., from his place on the Bench, and we feel assured that Mr Northcroft would have been pleased to be present on that ocaa-ioo, as it is mainly owing to his persistent effort” than Kawbia once more gives tbe King Country a lead, thia being tbe first Court bouse erected witbin that area, To ail who may be cathd on io dispense justice in the uew Court bouse we can only say fiat justitia, rua( coelum.
